Wondering why you didn’t get the job you applied for?

Maybe you attended an interview recently and thought it went well. However, you’ve now received an email saying that you were unsuccessful in getting the job. What do you do next?

Well, you could feel sorry for yourself and think that you’ll probably never get a job or you could feel frustrated and even angry as you know that you have all the qualifications and experience required to be successful.

The fact is that until you get some feedback from the person who interviewed you, then you will never be able to improve on your performance.

In reality, very few people make an effort to call or email to ask for feedback so, if you do, there is a high chance that you will receive some useful information.

Here are some ways you can ask for feedback:

By phone:

“Hi Russel, this is Laura Barclay. You may remember, I attended an interview with you a few weeks ago for the Environmental Engineer position. I understand that I was unsuccessful but I’m wondering if you can give me some feedback on my performance. I think it may help me with my job search.”

“Yes, Laura. I do remember you. Can I call you back at another time so that I can have a longer conversation with you? I’m about to go into a meeting soon.”

“Of course, when’s convenient for you? I’m free after 4.30pm today or tomorrow after 12pm.”

“Great, I’ll call you at 1.30pm. Not many people ask for feedback but it’s a good idea. I remember you were very impressive in your interview. Let’s speak more tomorrow. Bye!”

By email:

Dear Russel,

Thank you for taking the time to interview me a few weeks ago for the Environmental Engineer position. I understand that I was unsuccessful but I’m wondering if you can give me some feedback on my performance. I think it may help me with my job search.

If you prefer to discuss this further by phone, please let me know when’s a good time for me to call.

I look forward to speaking to you soon.

Regards,

Laura Barclay

After your conversation, you may realise that there are some areas of your personal performance that you can improve.

However, by taking the initiative and asking for feedback it shows the potential employer what type of person you really are. They may tell you about other vacant positions they have or suggest you apply for some upcoming roles that are going to be advertised soon. They may even refer you to another department or company that is looking for similar experience or skills.

Above all, even though you may feel vulnerable when you make the call or send the email, it’s a great way to develop your network. Give it a go!
