Need help making a Career Transition?

At different stages of our lives we need to change what we do for work. Sometimes it’s an internal career move, sometimes it’s going out into the job market and for some of us, it means moving to a new state or country!

Generally there are three categories of job search or transition:

  • you must find a new job (there are a lot of different reasons for this e.g. change in your personal situation)
  • you are looking for a promotion (either internal or external to where you work)
  • you want to look for something different

Whatever the situation, it can be a difficult, challenging or exciting time (or a mixture of all three) and it’s important to think clearly about your “WHY” as you ride the roller coaster to your new job.

Before you start applying for jobs, here are some questions to help you think about your current and next career move:

  1. Why did you take your current/previous job?
  2. What did you want to learn from it?
  3. What experience did you actually gain?
  4. Did it help you achieve what you wanted?
  5. If you stay in your current job, what additional experience do you think you can gain?
  6. What is important to you in your life now? Can you prioritise these? (e.g. Money, Family, Study, Travel, Visa etc)
  7. What do you want to get from your next job?

If you feel ready to start the process of looking for your next job, you should think about identifying roles that interest you and then, thinking about how each of them offer you what you are looking for. Make sure to use the Job ID Tracker to help you determine whether or not to apply for a position.
